About This Place

Nestled in the scenic farmlands of Coatesville, PA, The Whip Tavern offers an authentic British and American pub dining experience that feels like stepping into a cozy English countryside retreat. This charming tavern skillfully blends traditional British favorites with hearty American influences, creating a menu packed with comforting, flavor-packed dishes that invite you to savor every bite.

The Whip Tavern’s culinary offerings are a celebration of classic British fare. Diners rave about iconic dishes such as the perfectly spiced Scotch Egg—a crispy, golden exterior wrapping rich sausage and soft-cooked egg—and the indulgent Welsh Rarebit, with its velvety, sharp cheddar melted over toasted bread, offering that luscious, savory warmth with every forkful. The Shepherd’s Pie comes highly recommended, featuring tender braised short ribs nestled beneath a blanket of creamy mashed potatoes. For those craving a quintessential pub delicacy, the Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas delivers a satisfyingly crispy, flaky bite alongside a fresh, vibrant pea side that perfectly balances the plate.

There’s also an array of starters designed to awaken the palate, from Prince Edward Island mussels steamed in aromatic Strongbow cider broth, to house-made roasted garlic hummus paired with artisanal olive oil and fresh vegetables. The Stuffed Mushrooms incorporate locally sourced produce and pork ciders, crowned with creamy Welsh rarebit that melts blissfully on the tongue. For a touch of nostalgia and hearty flavor, menu highlights like Bubble and Squeak and the rich Braised Short Ribs bring soulful warmth that guests find deeply satisfying.

Dessert is an experience unto itself, with indulgences like the decadently sticky Toffee Pudding served alongside cool, silky ice cream, and the delightfully comforting Bread Pudding, each bite layered with sweetness and nostalgia. The beverage program echoes their British roots, featuring the intriguing Black Velvet—a Guinness and cider fusion—and a variety of imported beers and English-inspired drinks that elevate the meal beautifully.

But what truly makes The Whip Tavern stand out is its atmosphere. Walking into the tavern is like enveloping yourself in a warm hug—rich woodwork, a welcoming fireplace, and rustic charm abound. Whether you’re gathered with friends for a lively brunch, enjoying a romantic dinner, or sharing a cozy meal with family (it’s notably kid-friendly), the ambiance strikes a perfect balance between vibrant pub buzz and intimate comfort. Regulars praise the attentive, upbeat service that complements the convivial environment, making every visit memorable.

Praised by patrons like Chrystal Graham for its “FANTASTIC SERVICE” and “lovely atmosphere both inside and out,” and as Mary C describes, “a charming, rustic Irish pub that exudes authenticity,” The Whip Tavern is a beloved culinary haven where hearty flavors meet genuine hospitality. It’s a place that makes you want to return—not just for the generous portions and expertly crafted food, but for the feeling of belonging and warmth that infuses every corner of this inviting establishment.

Great food, FANTASTIC SERVICE, lovely atmosphere both inside and out! A great place to go with friends for lunch or a romantic dinner. Bangers and Mash is delish, a massive portion and the plate was practically licked clean! Huge beverage list with a lot to chose from even imported choices and English inspired beverages like beer mixed with lemonade! Who knew that was a thing? Highly recommend

Nestled in the picturesque farmlands of Coatesville, The Whip Tavern is a charming, rustic Irish pub that exudes authenticity from its decor to its menu. This beloved spot clearly has a loyal following, as it was packed even during a weekday afternoon visit. The food mostly lived up to its stellar reputation. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal—the scotch egg, served with the best Irish mustard I’ve ever tasted, and the bubble and squeak were both outstanding. For entrées, my husband raved about his bangers and mash, especially the rich, flavorful gravy. I enjoyed the shepherd’s pie, but it was slightly sweeter than I expected, perhaps due to an abundance of peas or a robust tomato paste base. We couldn’t resist trying the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, which lived up to its rave reviews—rich, sweet, and utterly satisfying. We’re already looking forward to returning to explore more of the menu at this delightful pub. If you're a fan of hearty, well-crafted Irish fare in a cozy atmosphere, The Whip Tavern is well worth a visit.

Fantastic tavern! Food, drink, atmosphere, and service were spectacular. Pleasant, upbeat, happy server staff, bar staff, and manager. Went there on Mother's Day 2025, busy day & place! The Shepards pie, and Welsh rarebit we both outstanding!

I Love this place, it's very cozy, like walking into a warm hug. The food is always outstanding. We both had the bangers and mash, the sausages were cooked perfectly and the gravy had good balance, not too salty. We will continue to come back again and again.

We were a party of 2, with reservations. First off, it's a real English pub in America. Bar None. It's in a quaint building on the crossroads of gorgeous agricultural countryside in rural Pennsylvania. It also boasts the fireplace, the woodwork, and the atmosphere. It's also Kid friendly, indicative of a real pub. Drinks: The draft menu was well rounded, with a nice collection of imports. All told probably 70+ beers and ciders to choose from. I settled on a Crabbie's Original Ginger Beer, which I haven't had for eons. My wife went with a Unsweetened Ice Tea, it was dark and definitely a house blend. They were a great start. Appetizers: We both settled on Welsh rarebit and bubble and squeak. They were fantastic. The B&S was very luscious. The freshness of the scallions and cabbage was incredible, and the sour cream was just this decadent compote of sorts that tied it together. The Welsh rarebit was equally delicious, and long after the Crostini was gone, the staff simply left it at the table as it basically became a dip-all for everything. It's that Damn good . Mains: I wanted to do a review on a full english experience in America. I went into this restaurant with that attitude. However, the special they offered BBQ Platters "Smoked Chicken Quarter, Banger, Pulled Pit Beef & Pork Belly with spicy pickles and Apple.Slaw" spoke to me. A truly Englich Pub producing American BBQ, the one food America is noted in creating. I had to try it, and I wasn't disappointed. First off, let's get this out of the way. This kitchen knows how to make slaw. I can confidently recommend anything with slaw in the description without even trying it. Not only was it house, but you can tell the recipe was scrutinized. The only sin was there wasn't more of it, same for the house pickles which was a bit unfortunate the meat was resting on it, so I couldn't get a full crisp bite, they were warm and limp, but the brine was good and the acid cut through the pork belly. Since we were going there, the pork belly was the star. It was so succulent , it's one of those things you can't stop eating. Tender, chewy with a hard smoke flavor that spreads across the palate. The BBQ chicken is another masterpiece, something that's often on menus and never delivers. The care and attention, full pink smoke throughout with absolutely delicious crisp skin. Based on the love and attention that went into it, let's just say the non shalont entry on the menu almost makes it feel cheap. It was excellent. The pulled beef pulled the whole plate together. The Banger... although there, I feel like it got lost. If you love sausage, I would do the bangers and mash to let that speak on its own. It was delicious, but I wanted gravy to go with it. My wife's English onion was from what she reported equally delicious, and although I didn't try it. A regret. She says she detected the worcestershire & and sage, and I could see the cheddar. All hallmarks of the real deal. Due to extreme inclement weather that was occurring at the time, we did cut the meal short of dessert, In hindsight, we should have stayed and tried the sticky toffee pudding. Final: We would definitely come back. If you follow us, you know we do a lot of pubs, mostly Irish. It was most excellent to find an English gem. Highly Recommend. Criticism: They have shepherd's pie and are known to do luxury pie. If you're going to go there based on the BBQ chicken. I would love to see a chicken pie. Thank you for a beautiful dinner.

Wonderful and aesthetically pleasing kind of atmosphere with amazing eats! We have celebrated 2 holiday parties here, once in 2023, once in 2024. We plan on doing our next holiday party here again in 2025. Recently met a friend for lunch here and it’s now our go to spot to meet up. Service can be a bit hectic, but it’s always compassionate and they are up front and honest when things are busy. Servers are great, drinks are interesting and tasty and again the food is so amazing! On our most recent visit we had this burger and chicken sandwich and we split both because of the interesting condiments that were on it and we had never heard of-truly out of this world! Excited to return. If you haven’t been-it’s a must go! Be aware parking could be tricky if it’s a busy night, if you can carpool that’s best. Oh-at the holiday party, we tried every dessert on the menu-everything is perfection! You can also BYOB and they’ll bring wine glasses to the table and open your bottle for you as well. There’s something for everyone at The Whip!

"A little piece of home" from the second I walked in I felt like I'd walked in a pub at home in Nottingham England. I was totally spoiled for choice with the options on the menu but the the number one food I miss from the uk is sausages so bangers and mash was the obvious choice. I now have to go back again sometime soon for the fish and chips but then I have to make the difficult decision to get mushy pees or curry sauce. I guess I could get both. Since then I also heard they do an amazing full English breakfast (brunch) so I guess what I'm saying is, "it's bloody lovely at the Whip and I'm gonna make it me second home!"
